When Lightning Strikes Your Network, Who's Protecting It?
For WISP operators managing infrastructure across towers, rooftops, and remote sites, one of the most underestimated threats isn't equipment failure or misconfiguration — it's the weather.
Voltage surges caused by lightning strikes, power grid fluctuations, or electrical interference are a daily reality in outdoor telecom environments.

And when a surge hits, it doesn't just degrade performance: it can instantly and permanently destroy expensive network equipment (radios, PoE devices, fiber OLTs) with no warning and no second chances.
The financial cost of replacing hardware is significant.
The operational cost of downtime, field dispatch, and service disruption can be even higher.
The Solution: Surge Protection That Actually Works
A Surge Protection Device (SPD) is the line of defense between an unpredictable electrical event and your critical infrastructure.
But not all SPDs are created equal. The most effective systems combine two complementary technologies in a dual-stage approach:
- The first stage is the GDT (Gas Discharge Tube)⚡
When a high-energy voltage spike hits the line, the gas inside the tube ionizes and creates a virtual short circuit — a "crowbar" effect that diverts the excess energy safely to ground. Once the surge passes, the GDT returns to its high-impedance state, ready for the next event. - The second stage is the TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor)🛡️
GDTs are excellent at handling massive energy loads, but ionizing gas takes a fraction of a second. That brief delay is enough for the fastest, sharpest spikes to slip through. TVS diodes — solid-state components — act as an ultra-fast voltage clamp, intercepting those initial transients before the GDT even activates.

Together, they provide complete protection: the TVS catches the first wave instantly, the GDT absorbs and grounds the heavy energy that follows.
No gap, no vulnerability.
9dot and Built-In SPD Protection
At 9dot, we believe surge protection shouldn't be an afterthought or an external add-on.
It should be engineered directly into the device.
That's why all our products integrate an advanced dual-stage SPD module (GDT + TVS) on every output port, delivering the full-spectrum protection described above at the point where your network is most exposed.
